What is embodied carbon?
  • The built environment contributes approximately 39% of global carbon emissions, of which about 11% is attributed to embodied carbon.
  • Embodied carbon refers to the emissions that arise from producing, procuring, and installing the materials and components that make up buildings.
  • Currently, embodied carbon forms almost 30% of the carbon footprint of the built environment. This share is expected to increase to more than 50% by 2050.
How does this tool work?

This tool is designed to help measure the embodied carbon footprint of real estate assets from the production and procurement of materials, and help developers to

  • Understand the embodied carbon footprint for different building types
  • Provide benchmarking information against contemporaries with similar building types
  • Find easy intervention points for reducing embodied carbon footprint
  • Contribute to development of an embodied carbon baseline for India

The inputs from this tool will be leveraged to develop India’s first Embodied Carbon Baselining study.
